New York City: the risks that matter most
Fire in your building, including e-bike battery fires
In an apartment building, a fire anywhere can damage your belongings with smoke and water and force you out. The FDNY has warned that lithium-ion batteries, such as those in e-bikes and scooters, are a significant cause of fires in the city; it reported 277 fires started by lithium-ion batteries in 2024. Renters insurance generally covers fire damage to your belongings and pays for somewhere to stay while your unit is repaired. If your device starts a fire that spreads, your liability coverage becomes important. The FDNY advises charging and storing these devices outside where possible.
Water from the apartment above
Leaks from neighbors are one of the most common apartment losses. Your policy covers your damaged belongings; your insurer can pursue the neighbor if they caused it. And if your overflowing tub damages the unit below, your liability coverage handles their claim. How water damage coverage works.
Theft: apartments, packages and bikes
Break-ins, bike theft and stolen packages are common city claims. Your belongings are generally covered for theft at home and away. Expensive bikes may need scheduled coverage, and small package thefts are often below your deductible.
Basement apartments and flooding
Heavy rainstorms can flood basement and garden-level apartments quickly. Standard renters policies exclude flood and usually exclude sewer backup unless you add a water backup endorsement. If you live below ground level, look at contents-only flood coverage and water backup coverage.
Upstate New York
Outside the city, winter is the main risk: frozen and burst pipes, and ice or snow damage. Sudden water damage from burst pipes is generally covered for your belongings; flood from rising water is not.
